Parks Technician - Hourly WAE

THIS POSITION IS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE FACILITIES MAINTENANCE TEAM. THE INCUMBENTS WILL COMPLETE CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIR WORK.
Performs as an entry level technician within a team of employees providing quality services and maintenance for the city''s parks, grounds, and related areas.
Examples of Duties:
Actively participates in team activity such as goal setting, problem solving, scheduling work, and evaluating team effectiveness and customer satisfaction. May have input to personnel decisions such as making recommendations for achievement awards, pay increases, disciplinary actions, and selection of employees to work within the team. Performs safety related functions as required in order to ensure the safety of citizens and employees.
Performs grounds maintenance tasks to include mowing, weeding, trimming, mulching, raking and cleaning parks, grounds, and athletic fields.
Operates all the level one equipment such as: power mowers, hand tools, small motorized tools, weed eater, attachments, pickup trucks, in connection with assigned maintenance duties. Operates chain saws, chippers, stump cutters and trimmers as required.
Performs horticultural and landscape duties when assigned, to include the maintenance of flower beds, shrubs and small trees in various locations throughout the city. Waters, prunes, fertilizes plants, and transplants a variety of plants, shrubbery and trees. Performs grading and seeding operations. Cuts and trims hedges and applies chemicals as directed to combat disease and insect problems.
Services and performs minor repairs and maintenance on motor equipment as needed, replacing worn blades, tightening nuts and bolts, checking fluid levels, and changing air filters. Performs daily inspections on equipment before leaving for work sites.
May assist Senior or Master Technician in the repair and construction of equipment, fences, shelters, benches, signs, buildings, fountains, irrigation systems, playground equipment, and tree maintenance operations.
May assist with repairs on mowers, tractors, chain saws, weedeaters, pumps, motors and other mechanical equipment.
Cross trains into several functional areas based on a training plan. Cross training may involve on the job training, in house classes and outside courses and seminars.
Performs other related duties as required.
Typical
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED preferred. Some experience required as a technician, equipment operator, or in a skilled labor intensive position, preferably in more than one functional area. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; good interpersonal skills. Ability to perform heavy outside manual labor. Any acceptable combination of experience and education which qualifies the applicant for this particular position may be considered for the more specific requirements outlined above. May be required to obtain a Registered Technician Pesticide License within six months of selection. Applicants must possess a valid motor vehicle operator''s license issued by the State of Virginia and must have a satisfactory driver''s record based on the City of Hampton''s criteria. Any person offered employment with the city in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances.
Supplemental Information:
This is entry level technical work consisting of the use of a variety of skills acquired through prior work experience and cross training. Duties require the ability to do heavy physical labor efficiently. Incumbent performs duties with general direction from a team leader or more senior technician, but works within a self directed team to carry out specific assignments without constant supervision. Duties may be performed out of doors in varied weather conditions and may be performed on nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Frequent contact with the general public and other employees is required and good interpersonal skills are most important.
