Automotive Maintenance Supervisor

Supervises Fleet Services technical staff in the effective execution of maintenance and repair activities for a variety of automotive vehicles and heavy motor equipment. Responsible for the efficient and effective use of all manpower and other resources to accomplish job execution.
Examples of Duties:
Assigns repair and maintenance work orders to maintenance and repair team members. Reviews and monitors work orders and schedules to maintain accuracy, scheduled completions, efficient manpower utilization, quality controls and optimum customer satisfaction.
Stays in contact with job progress, addresses any delays, and keeps jobs moving forward. Requests overtime approval when essential and make overtime assignments in accordance with established practices.
Obtains information and makes decisions about unanticipated repair and service events in the required timeframe. Coordinates maintenance efforts between shifts to achieve orderly completion of work. Regularly accounts for each technical staff member and adjusts job staffing as appropriate.
Communicates with Service Manager and Parts Manager as frequently as possible to ensure coordination of service delivery plans.
Assists in the development and implementation of policies and programs. Suggests ways to improve procedures and if appropriate and give advice and demonstrations. Through periodic debriefings with technical staff, identifies opportunities for improvement the next time the same or similar job is performed.
Execute administrative/personnel functions such as controlling tardiness, absenteeism, and vacations. Recommends personnel actions such as hiring, training, evaluating and disciplining employees. Assists in the development and implementation of technical staffs' performance goals.
Regularly holds safety, quality, and informational meetings with technical team members. Takes a leadership role in mentoring and training technical team members. Ensures the orderly conduct of maintenance team members with respect to City of Hampton and department policies and work rules.
Leads various department-related projects.
Ensures that good housekeeping and safe work practices are followed.
Perform other related duties as required.
Typical
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED; Associate degree in Management, Automotive Services or related field, or graduation from a vocational or technical school program in Automotive Mechanics required. Extensive experience in automotive repair and maintenance of automotive equipment required; Considerable supervisory experience in the automotive maintenance and repair or similar environment required. Must have a thorough knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance requirements, and repair/maintenance workflow optimization methods; ability to diagnose automotive problems; Excellent computer skills and familiarization with fleet information systems software preferred. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Must be in good physical condition. Must have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Must obtain a Master ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification within one year of employment. Must maintain ASE certifications. Any person offered employment with the city in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances. Any acceptable combination of experience and education which qualifies the applicant for this particular position may be considered for the more specific requirements outlined above.
Supplemental Information:
Receives supervision through periodic discussions and consultations with the Fleet Services Operations Manager. Works closely with and in conjunction with the Service Manager and Parts Manager. Position requires independent thinking and actions on behalf of the City, Fleet Services Department and customer departments. Position also requires incumbent to be on-call or respond to emergency situations during inclement weather and/or other job-related conditions. This position is Exempt.
